Pregnancy is... (First Trimester Edition)

Pregnancy is...

  • really vivid dreams about places you've not been in years
  • feeling a love so strong for a little person that you've never even met
  • making something for dinner which sounds amazing until you put it on a plate and it looks revolting
  • smiling while you vomit up your breakfast because you know that no matter how lousy you feel it will never compare to the feeling of that tiny baby in your arms
  • feeling tired, all the time
  • planning 2 breakfasts because 9 times out of 10 you'll lose the first one
  • the most exciting time of your life
  • downloading every baby app available
  • tracking the size of your baby in fruit
  • googling really weird things and finding out that you're not alone
  • looking into your partners eyes when he puts his hand on your tummy and knowing that you created something so special
  • smiling away to yourself when a wave of nausea hits
  • breathing through nausea while you are on the bus
  • never feeling like you are alone

Bump Update - Week 12

Hey everyone,

This is the week that we started to have a few more symptoms,

SYMPTOMS

New symptom this week seems to be IBS, I used to get this a lot when I was younger, agonising stomach pains for hours with little or no movement and then diarrhoea at the end but as of recent years I haven't had any symptoms of it. I had noticed a few weeks ago that it might be coming back and now it definitely has, all the same symptoms but I feel like the pain is worse now. Even before this started I had started to notice that if I move too quickly in bed I would get this sharp pain along my tummy kind of like pulling a muscle I guess so not sure if it's just the body's way of keeping baby safe. I think that might be what's causing the ibs pains to be worse either that or I just have a short memory! Other symptoms are much the same with vomiting in the morning and extreme fatigue but I am getting so used to these now that they just fit in with my normal routine.

SIZE OF BABY

This week baby is the size of Lime!

DEVELOPMENT

This is the final week of the first trimester!! Baby is now only 6cm in length but is fully formed! Baby is also continuing to move around and the skeleton which currently made of cartilage will soon harden to become bone,

RANDOM FACT

Baby is practising breathing.

Bump Update - Week 11

Hey everyone

This week was an exciting one for us because this week we heard baby's heartbeat! I had bought a doppler on amazon for later on in pregnancy but decided to try it out to see what we could find and as it happens one night david found our little nuggets heartbeat! It was so surreal to finally hear after knowing for so long that there was a baby in there but never quite believing it!

SYMPTOMS

This week again was just more sickness and fatigue which seems to have just become part of my routine now! I'm waiting for some more symptoms to start appearing but still can't manage much food, i'm looking forward to being able to eat full meals again.

SIZE OF BABY

This week baby is the size of a Fig.

DEVELOPMENT

Baby now has fingernails and can open and close fingers, baby also starts to develop ovaries or testicles this week however it will be a few more weeks before you will be able to tell on an ultrasound, baby's body is starting to even out although it's head will still be really big in comparison to it's body.

RANDOM FACT

Baby is moving around a lot even though you wont be able to feel it yet

Bump Update - Week 10

Hey everyone,

This week was the week where I visited my hospital for the first time. Had my first appointment with the midwife at the hospital and not my doctors surgery and the whole experience was fantastic. My midwife is absolutely incredible and my doctor is lovely too! I could not be happier. Had blood taken an even though I was dreading it it was a breeze!

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms this week were much the same with sickness and fatigue being top of the list, nothing new really happening just feels like it's still not sunk in yet even at this stage.

SIZE OF BABY

This week baby is the size of a Kumquat!

DEVELOPMENT

This week baby's jaw bones are developing as well as unbelievably baby's milk teeth! Baby now also has a functioning digestive tract. Also this week baby's fingers and toes are no longer webbed and they can move their wrists.

RANDOM FACT

In the past 3 weeks baby has almost doubled in size

Bump Update - Week 9

Hey everyone,

Here is my week 9 update! This was the week where I finally got my scan date!

SYMPTOMS

This week the only persistent symptom is morning sickness although most traces of food aversions are slowly disappearing, at the moment lollies and fruity sweets are definitely my favourite as well as chocolate which is very odd for me because i've never been someone who has been a sweet toothed person.

SIZE OF BABY

This week baby is the size of a Cherry,

DEVELOPMENT

This week baby is finally considered a Fetus and not an embryo! Baby's ears are now formed however the inner ear is still full of fluid this week which gives baby it's first sense of balance, baby is also now big enough to be picked up on ultrasound or through a doppler!

RANDOM FACT

Baby's reproductive organs are growing but can't yet be seen even through ultrasound.

Bump Update - Week 8

Hey everyone,

Here is my week 8 update! This was the week where I had my first midwife appointment which didn't go very well and on the same day as meeting her I requested a transfer and now have a new midwife.

SYMPTOMS

This week symptoms have been much the same as before although I have definitely got on top of the morning sickness, i'm starting to have moments where I really want certain food but I think it's too soon for proper cravings, this week it was really strongly flavoured pickled onion Walkers crisps, baby is obviously just like mummy! This week I have been drinking a lot more water which is less of a symptom and more of an action on my part, I am also starting to get my appetite back sometimes which is really nice because I haven't been eating a lot at all. Also today for the first time I experienced real fatigue! I honestly thought that I was going to fall asleep at my desk or in the toilet at work but then when I got home all I did was clean the whole house which anyone who knows me knows is very out of character!

SIZE OF BABY

At 8 weeks the baby is the size of a Raspberry.

DEVELOPMENT
Baby's little fingers and toes are now formed however at the moment they are still webbed. Baby's lungs are developing even further this week and at this stage baby is growing by about 1 millimetre every day!

RANDOM FACT

This is the week where baby is no longer known as an embryo but rather as a foetus.

Bump Update - Week 7

Hey everyone,

Welcome to my week 7 update.

SYMPTOMS

The symptoms this week are similar to last week but more intense, morning sickness is well under way and what started as a feeling of nausea has turned into full blown sickness, at the moment I am just trying to learn how to deal with the symptoms on a day to day basis as every day is slightly different.

I am finding that eating small and often helps however my stomach has shrunk and what used to seem like a very measly amount of food now fills me completely, nothing food wise sounds good but I have discovered that salt and vinegar crisps seem to take away the nausea. Another thing that I have tried are Ginger Nut biscuits as well as Ginger Ale but the biscuits seem to be the favourite at the moment because I am struggling with anything remotely carbonated as it makes me gassy.

Another weird symptom that hit this week is constipation, I wont go into details but lets just say it's not pleasant.

SIZE OF BABY

At 7 weeks baby is the size of a blueberry.

DEVELOPMENT

At week 7 the baby's brain is growing rapidly and it's head will be large in proportion to the rest of it's body, the inner ear starts to develop this week however wont be visible on the outside for another few weeks. Baby's little arm and leg buds start to form into cartilage which will eventually develop into bone, these arm buds are getting longer and flattening at the ends which will become baby's tiny hands

RANDOM FACT

At this stage in pregnancy baby has already gone through 3 sets of Kidneys and this week it will start to develop the final set
